Type of child marriage

There are three main types of early or child marriage in Ethiopia:

Promissory marriage, whereby a verbal promise is made at infancyor even childbirth by the parents to have their children get married.

Child marriage, in which children under the age of 10 are wedded

Adolescent marriage, which involves girls aged between 10and 15.

In most cases, the child bride is taken to her in-lawsimmediately after the wedding; in other cases the parents agreethat the girl stays with her parents until she is mature enough tolive with her husband.

In general, most of these children were married to older men, which presents serious communication problem, which is essential for a happy and successful marriage.
