Faith organisations and community support groups

 

On 7 and 8 June 2011, 70 women and men from more than 55 grassroots and global organisations working to end child marriage around the world, came together in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This strategic planning meeting – to discuss the formation of an ‘Alliance to end child marriage’, was initiated by The Elders and attended by Dr Gro Brundtland, Mrs Graça Machel, Mrs Mary Robinson and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Drawing on the painful personal experiences of our members who married early and missed their childhood and education; we working with local communities and civil society organisations in the UK and Ethiopia to change attitudes away from early marriage to education for girls as long term insurance against poverty.

Promoting Awareness

Knowing about a problem is the first step towards a solution. Although there is considerable publicity and support services for the victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Honour Killing, very little if anything is known about child marriage in the UK and other developed countries.  This is mainly because politicians in the developing countries where the practice is prevalent prefer to call it “early marriage” to disguise the reality.  In addition, the former child wives who are now living in the UK and other developed countries are too embarrassed to tell their story and expose the horror.

We network and develop alliances with other women’s organisations, share information and experiences.  We organize joint events, look for areas of common work, make referrals as necessary and avoid wasteful duplication of efforts and resources.
